Before booking another exam, check your options

Keeping a certification active belongs in your study budget just as much as earning it in the first place. Before buying more preparation or booking a test, find out which renewal routes your credential supports.

In July 2026, Google announced a continuing education route through Google Skills for Cloud Digital Leader, Associate Cloud Engineer, Professional Cloud Architect, and Professional Data Engineer. Completing the designated courses or skill badges can extend an eligible credential by one year without a proctored renewal exam.

That creates a useful choice: spend time on relevant learning, or prepare for an exam that may provide a longer renewal period. The right choice depends on your access to training, your schedule, and how long you want to keep the credential active.

Timing matters: check the final-year window

Google’s renewal help page says qualifying learning must be completed during the final year before the certification becomes inactive. Earlier completions cannot count or be retaken for renewal; choose other eligible activities instead.

The extra year is added to the existing inactive date. For example, an eligible credential ending December 30, 2027 would move to December 30, 2028 after completion. It is not simply one year from the day you finish.

Our suggestion: put the window-opening date and a personal completion deadline on your calendar. Leave time to resolve account issues. Waiting until the final day offers little practical benefit.

Find the designated renewal learning path

Check the email in CM Connect, then use a matching primary or professional email for Google Skills. In the Certifications tile, grant the requested data-sharing permission. Eligible credentials show a Renew button that opens their designated learning path.

Use that path rather than assuming any course or badge counts. If Renew is missing, check your eligibility and timing before spending money.

Once you finish, verify the updated date in your certification record. Save a note of the new deadline for your own planning.

Compare cost per added year, not just the checkout total

Cloud Digital Leader illustrates the trade-off. Its published standard exam fee is $99 before applicable tax. The shorter renewal exam costs $60, lasts 45 minutes, and provides three years of validity. Google Skills renewal provides one year.

Google Skills currently lists a no-cost Starter option with 35 monthly credits and limited labs, plus Pro at $29 per month. Check the designated activities and your existing access before subscribing. Those listed plans do not establish that your entire renewal path is free or that you can finish it in one month.

For a planning example, if one $29 month covers everything you need, the incremental learning cost would be $29 for one added year. A $60 renewal exam spread over three added years works out to $20 per year before tax. This comparison excludes preparation, retakes, and the value of your time. It also assumes no exam discount.

If you already have suitable employer-funded training access, the additional out-of-pocket learning cost could be lower. Ask what is covered. Compare the actual totals available to you, rather than buying the option with the smallest headline price.

Check discounts without assuming they stack

Before paying for an exam, inspect your own certification benefits and the final checkout total. A voucher may change the comparison, but do not assume it applies to every exam or can be combined with another reduced price.

Our guide to the 50% exam discount explains where to look in your benefits account. Keep that task separate from choosing a continuing education path: completing our practice exams does not count toward Google’s designated renewal learning.

Make a small renewal plan now

  • Record your current inactive date and eligible renewal route.
  • Check the required activities before purchasing learning access.
  • Ask your employer about training access and exam reimbursement.
  • Compare total cost, time commitment, and added validity.
  • Complete the requirements with time to resolve problems.
  • Verify the new inactive date and update your reminders.

If another certification better fits your next role, budget for that separately. Extending a credential you already hold and earning a new one are different decisions. This guide covers the options available now; it does not promise unlimited annual extensions or eligibility for every certification.
