Choose the work before the credential
Cloud Digital Leader offers a broad cloud-business foundation. Generative AI Leader concentrates on business understanding and adoption of generative AI. Both are foundational options, but they answer different learning needs. Neither should be treated as an automatic substitute for hands-on engineering preparation.
Which conversation do you want to lead?
Connect business needs with cloud capabilities.
- Data and AI
- Infrastructure and applications
- Security and operations
Evaluate generative AI opportunities and adoption.
- AI fundamentals and offerings
- Improving model output
- Business adoption strategy
Choose CDL for a broader cloud vocabulary
Consider CDL first if your work crosses infrastructure, data, security and cloud-business decisions and you want a coherent starting vocabulary. For example, a product manager joining a cloud migration project may need to follow discussions across several specialties.
Our decision prompt: list five conversations at work that you currently find hard to follow. If the gaps span multiple cloud areas, broad preparation may be the more useful first investment. Read the official objectives before deciding whether those gaps match this exam.
Choose Gen AI Leader for an AI-focused learning goal
Consider Generative AI Leader first if your immediate work involves evaluating AI opportunities, discussing adoption, or helping teams make business choices about generative AI.
Try writing a one-page proposal for a fictional AI use case. If you struggle to define the objective, evaluate output, or identify adoption concerns, those gaps give you a concrete study goal. This exercise is a way to clarify your needs, not an assessment of exam readiness.
Choose an engineering path when the work calls for it
If your goal is deploying and operating cloud workloads, read the Associate Cloud Engineer guide as well. Google recommends hands-on experience for that certification. You may still benefit from foundational study, but there is no reason to buy two packs simply because a catalog places them first.
Write down the tasks you want to perform after studying. A credential that matches your role is more useful than collecting prerequisites you do not actually need.
When studying both makes sense
Both may fit if you need broad cloud fluency and a separate AI-focused vocabulary. Start with the gap most relevant to your next project. Finish one preparation cycle, reflect on what was useful, and then decide whether the second certification adds value.
Each certification has its own full-access purchase. Choose the certification that fits your goals; there is no need to buy both. Verify current requirements, fees and availability on the official pages before booking.
